Wyatt quits Softs - Melody Maker - September 4, 1971

Robert Wyatt, drummer and singer with the Soft Machine, has left the band.

The reason for his departure is believed to be a difference of musical opinion, apparent for some months, which crystalised during the band’s recent and highly-successful American tour.

A member of the Softs since their very earliest days in Canterbury, Wyatt left them for a short period last year when, fort he same reasons, he went to play with Kevin Ayers and The Whole World. He returned when he found that Ayer’s outfit came no closer to realising his musical ambitions.

Wyatt’s replacement in the Soft Machine will be Phil Howard who has for some months been a member of the part-time quartet of Soft’s altoist Elton Dean.
